FORMA FEATURE / NOSETip rotation: measurements, ratios, and research
Tip rotation contributes to the orientation of the nasal base. The nasolabial angle also depends on the upper lip, so it is not a pure rotation measurement. This page separates published measurements from interpretation, preference experiments, and community speculation.
What tip rotation means
Measure the angle between the columellar tangent and the upper-lip tangent at their junction. Keep the lip relaxed and note the exact method.
Facial measurements only become comparable when the view, head position, soft-tissue landmarks, and endpoint definitions are held constant. A number copied from a profile photograph is not interchangeable with a value measured from a clinical scan or a front-facing portrait.

95.96° Another survey’s male mean
A separate study reported a male mean of 95.96° with a standard deviation of 2.57°.

95° A Japanese sample’s preference
The Japanese nasal-angle study favored 95° in male profiles.

Practical takeaway
The mid-90s are a useful male starting point.
Several sampled preferences cluster near that nasolabial angle. Judge the tip’s orientation together with visible nostril and columellar show.
What changes the answer
The angle includes upper-lip slope. Two identical tip positions can measure differently when the lip inclines differently, and the same angle can show different amounts of nostril.
Use these ranges to ask a better question about proportion—not to grade a face or choose a procedure by number alone. A qualified clinician still needs to examine function, tissue, skeletal structure, and your goals in person.
